ATTAC Consulting Group’s Subbu Ramalingam spoke with Jiselle Lee of Health Payer Specialist about new signs that Medicare Advantage payers are using Star ratings to decide which counties to leave.

An analysis of CMS’s 2027 landscape data cited in the article found that counties facing the heaviest plan nonrenewals averaged lower star ratings than counties with few nonrenewals. Subbu noted that payers “have been thinking about this a lot,” and that some have exited areas where their ratings have been consistently low.

His advice for plans: “Plans will need to accelerate improvement on the different star measures immediately in January.”
